Unit 1A Chapters
Read and study your Volume 1A How to make 3D terrain [2/10 or 🟦 ] for Chapter One, and [ 📋 ] Good 3D Terrain Combos Textbook for Chapter Two, diligently. Every unit will have an exam. This textbook along with the next 2 chapters of your GGAG Textbook (Chapters 1-2) will be your study guide for an easy A.
Chapter One: Layering, And (sir)Why(wy)
“Chapter One: Layering, And Why.”
So, you all know SirWyWy, correct? The “Layer Your Terrain Guy”. Not only is he the greatest 3D Terrain Artists I’ve ever met, but he upholds a great truth about layering.
Section one:
Alright class, let’s begin.
See, there are two types of layers. Basic and Terrain. You’re probably familiar with Basic, where you organize your devices and props. Terrain layers are specifically for, well, terrain. It can change the look of an entire build, so remember: Layers are the HEART of 3D Terrain.
Layers make your 3D terrain seem more natural. less blocky, more so, visually appealing. If you were to go outside (which you don’t), you wouldn’t see perfectly lined dirt, and think that naturally happened. But you wouldn’t know because you don’t go outside.
It’s important to know how to layer your terrain here. You always want your base platform to be on top of the depth part, like this:
Make sure to be aware of what layer you’re using, because it can be a pain to fix if you’ve made a lot of progress already.
Chapter Two: Material Appeal
Alright, let me paint a picture for you. Set the scene, may you.
So, have you ever gone on a public city bus and noticed your seat fabric looked like someone barfed their brains out then after eating every single color dye possible, including Red 40?
Yeah, see, that’s a bad design. Now, in this chapter, we’ll teach you how to avoid this.
Well, Wy[Wy] does this matter? Well I’m glad you asked! I’m sure no one wants their game to look bad. No no, we want the plays, the Dopamine. So it’s always important to put in the work to make sure it’s appealing.
When you’re making 3D terrain, you have to think about themes. I want…a space theme, let’s say. An amazing example would be straight out of our curriculum textbook: [ 📋 ] Good 3D Terrain Combos.
It’s simple, and the theme works. Space rock with a starry depth.
Now, here’s another example.
See the difference? The first image is much better than the second one since it has a satisfying combo with a goal in mind.
Experiment. Find your style, find your combos.

Chapter 3
Chapter 4
Alright, let’s test your knowledge. For this summative, will follow the instructions below. You will use your skills you’ve learned to make the finished product. Not every step has everything you need to know, so you will have to learn to use your common sense skills.
Good luck, and no talking.
Unit 1A Summative Exam
Multiple Choice Portion
- Fersion made a grass island and wrote down steps
- First: Placed down grass on layer 3
- Second: Changed to layer 4
- Third: Placed dirt
What did Fersion do wrong?
A) He put the grass below the dirt.
B) He forgot to layer.
C) He did nothing wrong.
- TMC wrote a short paragraph on why layering doesn’t matter in 3D Terrain making. In the paper, he said:
“Layering is not needed when making 3D Terrain since you need sharp edges. When you layer, it ruins the sharpness of the corners, which brings out the depth. Professionals like SirWyWy never layer because it ruins the image. When you don’t layer, it makes it look natural.”
Is this true or false?
A) True
B) False
Interactive Portion
This portion includes a study of Unit 1B. Do your best.
Read instructions 1-5 before beginning. This will be split in two sections. 1-2 and 3-5.
Section one: 1-2.
- Place a 3x4 grass patch.
- Place dirt under as your depth.
Section two: 3-5.
- go 3 blocks left from 3x4 island.
- Multiply step 1 measurements by 2.
- Make x2 larger island.
Post your own answers in a reply (stay on topic) and I’ll add your grade to the gradebook.
