If you walk normally, your trail will have a max of seven items on it.
If you hold right and spam left, the trail can have way more than seven items on it before decaying.

An easier way to accomplish the bug is to tap two non-opposite directions at the same time quickly.

Yes - I think it’s because the decay of trails is time-based and generating new icons is based on pressing movement keys. Pressing more keys generates more icons in a shorter amount of time, but the additional icons still don’t disappear until a certain amount of time has passed.
