Intro : I’ve stumbled upon many maps in GKC, and lots of them happened to be top-down, usually I’m fine with these maps, for the most part. Some top-down GKC maps (especially the ones in the new releases) have one or more errors that make the experience more unfun or boring. In this tutorial, I will go over these errors and come up with some possible solutions to these errors. Enough of me yapping though, lets get to it!
Sentry Spam
Sentry Spam is a major problem in GKC maps, as it causes some lag and can sometimes cause spawncamping. Despite this problem being major, there is an obvious fix to this. SPACE OUT YOUR SENTRIES! It’s simple and reduces lots of lag. It’s okay to have two, three and heck even four sentries grouped together, but having ten or more sentries in one area could cause lag on mobile devices, which will reduce your play count, and it’s also unfair to the player because they are rapidly getting damaged, and they sometimes cannot even do anything about it.
What NOT to do:
What TO do:
(see how less memory is taken up)
Questioners giving gadgets
There is no feeling more annoying in a GKC map then entering a fight with a ton of sentries, and then finding a questioner. You think that the questioner would give you medium shards, so you spam through questions, just to realize that the questioner was handing out legendary blasters. You then have to slowly drop every single blaster except for one, which can take around 15 seconds at the shortest. The most simple solution to solving this is adding some sort of visual indicator that the questioner will hand out a gadget, using text or an item image could help out a great deal, and could act as good indicators.
What NOT to do:
What TO do:
(Using text also works as stated before)
Unfunny trolls
Some GKC trolls are funny, but others are more frustrating, and frustrating trolls do NOT help your maps perform better. A simple solution to this is just not including trolls at all. While sure, trolls can be funny, sometimes they are extremely unfunny and frustrating because you are sent all the way back to the beginning of the map, which again, nobody likes.
What NOT to do:
Fake dialogue
Dialogue is a simple thing to make in GKC, which makes it all the more annoying when you mess it up. A solution to this could be writing the dialogue in a popup instead of the button itself. This tip may take an extra step, but it makes your game feel WAY more interactive and fun than the previously mentioned fake dialouge.
What NOT to do:
What TO do:
*this helps make the game feel more polished
Poorly made rooms
Imagine seeing an open wall. You decide to go through it, just to realize that there is literally nothing there, not even another exit back out. This screams poorly made to me, and it makes your map feel way less polished. The primary solution here is to just close all of your walls. That way you cannot randomly wander out and become disappointed, and that way you can also make your map look WAY more polished.
What NOT to do:
*The open wall allows for an unintentional, boring route that makes your map less polished
What To do:
Ugly terrain combos
Sometimes terrain allows for great detail, like good looking grass, and nice looking metal that cannot be done efficiently with other methods of art like barrier art, on the other hand though, terrain can be used to make ugly block combos, that don’t look good in the slightest. The solution here is to use sets of terrain that look similar or have a similar color to one another. You could also use combos like dark and light scraps, but make sure that your terrain combos don’t clash with each-other too much.
What NOT to make:
*The yellow and pink clash with each-other too much, forming an ugly terrain combo
What you SHOULD make:
*The similar colors allow for this terrain combo to look better and more polished.
