This is for fleet
so yeah, you can start now.
Hi! after using puzzles alot of times in my game I (@Fleet) have decided to bring to you this guide! in this guide we will cover
- What puzzles are
- How to make a good puzzle
- Some Example Puzzles (and how they work).
- How to make a good difficulty curve if you have multiple
What are puzzles?
Puzzles, in GKC are usally some challenge for the players in your game that they need to solve before they proceed, for example finding letters in the alphabet to get a code or counting objects to find a code or making a maze that the players have to find objects to continue. these can be a GREAT way to add some more fun value to your games, infact some games revolve entirely around them. Genres that use puzzles the most are horror games, and (obviously) puzzle games.
How to make a good puzzle
Good puzzles often have their difficulty scale with the part of the game they are in, for example. if a puzzle is the first in your game, you want to try to give hints that are obvious but still confusing enough in order for it to be a challenge.
Example Puzzles
Numbers to Letters
See this puzzle? This is a puzzle to find a code for a door. basically
you need to find what letter each number represents, to open the door.
the puzzle is easy, there are hints, as there is a text telling you the number 8 represents the letter H, now if you notice the 8th letter in alphabet text, is indeed H, telling you that this is how you will solve the puzzle, by counting to a number in the number text, to a letter that is that letter # of the alphabet eventually getting a code of helpless (most of these examples are from my own game, so don’t mind the codes, they make sense in my game)
How to make a good difficulty curve for puzzles
usually with puzzles, the first one is the easiest, and you scale up your difficulty per puzzle by giving less and less hints, but still having it possible without a complete guess. for example I have this puzzle here:
See if you can guess the answer to this puzzle, check if you were right by unblurring the spoiler below
The Answer is 2027
this is an example of a medium difficulty puzzle, it doesn’t have much hints, but there is still enough that its not considered hard.h
Conclusion
in conclusion this is how you can make some pretty good puzzles for your games! I hope you enjoyed this guide as much as I did making it, Toodles!
