why? why are they disabled? also next to one of my replies it said i could make a private message

It’s disabled, but the notification still shows up. It will only make a new topic. (They don’t want kids chatting in school.)

Private messages are disabled because of the safety of the other forum users. This is an educational forum.
This is a forum bug. @josh has yet to update the forum yet, as the latest Discourse build does not have this issue.

It’s over a year old 
Nearly a year old.
The forum has not been updated since November 2023.
The bug was fixed in early 2024.
