Idea's for "Who's There?" (a horror game) read desc for detals

so i’m making a game (thank you kh44359 for the idea-ish for this game) and I have no clue how to start.


description of the game

you and your gim friends are in the forest, playing a game of Tag: Domination, and you keep on losing thanks to your “friend” Josh, cheating.
you then yell at Josh and storm off.
after you cool off, you hear a scream, so you run back to your friends, you can only seem to find your friend Holly, who also heard the scream.
Josh is nowhere to be found, and you and Holly become very paranoid until Holly also disappears while you are finding supplies.
You are stuck in the forest, with some sort of demon slowly stealing your friends and your sanity.

Characters

Holly: Pronouns Xe/Xem/Xyr, xe doesn’t talk much, thanks to xem’s family being abu/iv
Josh: Pronouns He/Him/His, cheats in everything, might be behind the game.

here is your lore!
the air in the blackwood thicket has a “chilling” that can be only broken by the frantic echo of your breath, a silence that started the moment of Josh’s victorious, cheating laughter that turned into a final suffocated scream. you didn’t just “walk away” you submitted the sin of abandonment at a nexus where the vein, between youthful malice and the thin hungry entity only know as “The Dominator” was waiting.
Now every crunch of a leave is ghostly, and "The Tagged’ can never be “IT”. While Holly lured away the demons cruel mimic of safety is gone. You are the last player in a rigged game of tag where the point of the game is defeat and the you’re running from some creature(the Dominator) that’s already won.

LORE:

You and your 2 other gim friends are playing a heated game of Tag: Domination out in the forest. But, the laughter is tinged with tension–your friend Josh keeps cheating, twisting the game into something ugly. You then, finally snap, fury overtaking the fun. You scream, your voice echos into the abyss, furious as you storm away. The wood swallows you into the deep fog.

The cold night air wraps around your skin like a serpent of frost. Branches claw at your skin as you wander deeper into the dark forest. Then, a desperate scream shatters the cold silence. Raw, desperate, scared and close. Your race back, but the game, once both fun and infiruating, has turned into something horrifying. The game has drastically changed.

Josh.. Is missing… Holly is right where Josh used to be standing, she whimpers, then starts to explain something to me. “I- I saw something moving in the bushes! I.. I think a creature to Josh!” Holly says, only coming out as a desperate whimper. “Haha! Very funny, you can come out now!” No response, that’s when you finally realize, the game is over. Something dangerous, evil and unholy has taken Josh. “H-Holly, did you see who, or what took Josh?” You say “No.. All I saw was a black and red blue and.. Josh was gone!” Holly says, scared and desperate.

You then hear the drop of a flashlight. “Wait for me!” You say, you spin around, only for Holly to be gone as well. “H-Holly!? Where are you!?” You say anxiously. Now, you are alone. Your heavy breaths and the sound of the cold breeze are the only sound in the dark, cold silence. Every one of your steps, haunted by unseen eyes and faint whispers.

A voice hisses from the shadows. “You’re next.” Your memories twist, reality unravels. This creature isn’t just stealing your friends, its devouring your sanity, feeding off your fe@r. You then realize, your not just fighting for your own life, your fighting for your own mind. Will you Escape? Become another lost scream in the icy darkness? The choice, is up to you.

Finished! I’ll probably make more later. Let me know if I should change anything.

So, request for an edit of the lore…
The main character (the player) never sees the monster until the boss fight at the end, and Holly actually is blind, and doesn’t talk much, so xe just shakes her head to respond.

i have a few questions

whats the gameplay like?
what does the monster look like?
could you be a little bit more specific with the forest setting? like are they in a tent set up in a little clearing- are they near a cliff- those kind of things
are you familiar with block coding? (things like scratch count)
do you have experience with building? (in gimkit)

Q1: Gameplay is unknown (that’s half why this is a topic) but it mostly is a horror forest vibe
Q2: The monster is a dark creature, but it’s actually Chompz.
Q3: The setting is in the middle of the Forest, surrounded only by trees by a mountain.
Q4: well, a little but not a lot.
Q5: yes, this is my second game, but it’s my first Top down one.

It’s great, but please use the characters correct pronouns, I know it’s small detail, but please fix.

i have a little concept for gameplay
so what if
chompz just appears randomly in certain areas and if you get into a certain range where you can see them
it lowers a sanity bar
same thing with random creepy things like josh/holly with a black scribble on their face

and at the same time you have to manage a campfire by going out to collect twigs and branches to fuel it
if the campfire goes out you can either:
get attacked by chompz or
have sanity bar decrease faster

when the sanity bar is empty then you lose and when you also get attacked by chompz you also lose

i can do sanity bar and campfire
the monster thing i might need a bit of thinking time

tell me if i made any errors or if theres any confusing parts

these are basically the bare mininum
you can make visual elements
like with the campfire you could make an actual campfire and make it go out with no fuel

sanity bar

heres what it should (basically) look like in creative when finished


if you can think of a way to save memory then go for it

make sure everything is set to only applies for player!!!

make a property named sanity thats a number
then make a counter
for the counter make the starting value however high you want sanity to be
and make it so when the counter updates it updates sanity
sanity will be the number on the counter
give it a target value of 0 (this will be used to ‘game over’ the player when they lose all sanity)

then make a wire repeater loop that triggers a checker (shown near the top)
you can set the wire repeater delay to anything you want
make sure the lifecycle triggers the first wire repeater when game starts
dont do anything with the checker yet

make a zone (you can put chompz in it or make it visible if you want (this is to mark the location of the zone during testing))
you dont have to edit the zone in any way
make a property named “inZone?” thats a number
boolean wont work because checkers only work with numbers
assume 0 is false and 1 is true

make two triggers
connect them with wires and make it so one of them triggers when the player enters the zone
and the other one triggers when the player exits the zone
give both of the triggers a block for ‘when triggered’ and put this inside the one for entering the zone


for the other trigger do the opposite and make it so it sets inZone? to 0

NOW you can do something with the checker
now make it so the checker will check if inZone? is equal to 1 (true)


and make it broadcast channel ‘lowerSanity’ if check passes

now back to the counter
make it decrement when it receives lowerSanity

now youre almost done!!! (yipee)

optional overlay (recommended for gameplay)

make sanity broadcast a channel called ‘sanityChanged’ when the property value changes
make a overlay and give it a block


and inside that block do this

the text with "Sanity : " can be anything you want it to be

for the gameover part you can make it do anything you want to do
but what i did for it is respawn the player and set sanity back to the starting value
put a trigger and respawn
connect them both to the counter using wires
set the wires to this:

target value reached > activate the respective thing
make it so when the trigger is triggered make it broadcast a channel called ‘sanityGone’
now go back to the counter again and make it so that it resets when receiving sanityGone

campfire

this is what it should look like when finished


there might be a more memory efficient way to do this

make everything apply globally!!!

make a wire repeater loop (thing at the top) and connect it to a trigger
make the trigger transmit a channel called ‘lowerFuel’ when triggered
this will do exactly what it sounds like


make a property called ‘campfireFuel’ and make it a number
this will be the only property used

make a counter and make the starting value however much fuel you want the campfire to start at
i put it at 100 for this guide
make the counter increment when recieving ‘increaseFuel’ and decrement when recieving ‘decreaseFuel’
also make sure that it updates campfireFuel


and give it a target value of 0

wow! all you need to do is make fuel work now!

make a button that gives a item (any item works (i used a dark green seed because it looks like a leaf)) with a item granter
it can give any amount of items

now make a button
and wire it up to a checker
make the checker check if you have more than [number - 1] fuel items
you’ll want to remember the number (just the number without removing one)
now make a trigger
have the trigger broadcast ‘increaseFuel’ when triggered
wire it up to the checker and trigger the trigger when the check passes
make as many triggers as you want to
each trigger will increase the fuel that the fuel item gives by 1

i forgot to inculde this in the picture


add a item granter and wire it to the checker
and make it remove the number of fuel items required to fuel the campfire
