Cliffs of Insanity! [1]
Using 3D terrain you could make some dark cliffs that the adventurer (s) has (have) to climb to reach the next part of the map. If you want to, you could take my idea and make a version of the fight scene in the movie.[2] You could make teleporting sentries for some cool action, make it sandy themed with random times for the sentries to teleport, within a time range of course.
My other idea is some boggy land with minor jumpscares like quicksand and potentially some barrier art giant rodents like the ones that attack in the film.
Maybe you could also make a tree that opens up to reveal an area with an optional boss fight which gives a good reward and clues towards the rest of the adventure and you find out more about your mystery followers through your life and the secrets behind their actions.
If you want I would be happy to make some lore to elaborate on this idea. I think it would be great if you have the protagonist being tracked down by the “baddies” over time.
I would also suggest maybe a bank heist scene when you run out of money on your travels to save someone. I’ll go more in depth on this as well if you want too.

Long ago in the year 2025, there was a person, his name was GimBob. GimBob was just your average teenager. He was a big time gamer. He really liked studying on his favorite education gaming site, gimkit. He was a big fan of a game made by his favorite developer, Cvefy. He was exploring the website when he found a new game that had Cvefy in the game. Of course he knew he had to play the game when he saw this. He opened up the game to discover a free to roam game where he discovered puzzles and clues to lead him to enemies trying to stop him from finding the end of the game. After long and tiring puzzles he found himself face to face with Cvefy. But not Cvefy. Cvefy had been turned into a vampire. So he started the boss fight, when his screen started glitching. Then he realized he was thirsty. He got up to go get a drink and found out he was no longer in his room. But he recognized the place. He saw a person to his right and went to talk to him. The person told him where he was. Then he tried to ask the person something else. Where the person just told him the same thing. Now he knew where he was. He was in the game . A guy came up to him and told him about the long enduring mission that will most-likely result in his unaliving. He knew that it would be hard but he had to figure out how to get out of the game. He also knew he could finally met Cvefy in person. And with that he began to travel to the first fight
