How to Terrain on Platformers: Part Two

Alright, free platforming is releasing soon, and I’d like to make sure no one messes up their terrain too badly. Most trending maps have bad, unlayered, messy terrain. We will be looking at ways to fix that.

So, in the last guide I covered stairs. This time, it will be more general all around.

Terrain Sticking out of Walls

First, if you would want to make a wall, with terrain sticking out of it, it would look like this.

Not the best, right?
So you can layer the terrain under.

The problem is, there is still a bit of extra terrain grass sticking out.
There are multiple solutions to this.

Usually it’s best to stick away from the last one, but it can be useful if you need to move down a layer.

Sometimes, on occasions when terrain isn’t sticking out of a wall, but there is still extra bits of grass poking out, it can be solved in a much simpler way.

Here, we can fix it by just building the terrain up.

Tada!

Area Building

Now, when making rooms/areas, I like to start on layer one, with a terrain type I will not use in the room. For example, here I am making a cave-ish room out of snow, but will not use dark scraps.

So I start with making an outline, it’s ok if it is a bit messy.

Next I start with the bottom.

There is a spot that takes a step up and needs to be fixed. So I layer the terrain to split it up.

Next I go to the left wall. I fill it with terrain on layer 3.

Now, to fill in the top I start with terrain on layer 5, jumping 2 steps from layer 3. You will see why.

Then, I fill the layers above with terrain on layer 4 and 3

Finally, we turn our attention to the right side.
I use terrain on layers 4, 3, and 2 to fill this part in.

Finally, I would delete the dark scraps.

General Tips

  • Start with an outline of what you will create when building, this will help.

  • Try to avoid use of layers 1 and 5, it is ok to use them, but make sure nothing will be layered below or beneath them before using them.

  • Try not to make messy terrain, keep it neat. What I mean is don’t do this:
    {E70F2767-F07D-450B-A677-D4EB368FA1E1}

  • If you are getting too close to using layers 1 or 5, see if you can sneak a way to “move” up or down a layer.

  • As always, avoid this.

Now like the guide otherwise all your terrain will look terrible >:)

This is just what i needed! my terrain buiding, (or placing, whatever you call it) sucks… but with the help of this guide (hopefully) it will do better.

I love how absolutely no one besides me uses layers in platformer :skull:
