You can just take some elements from the original (I’ve never played it)

As I said, I’ve never played the game before, but I think you can make a simple tower defense game then put decorations over it (like balloons)

Second, what do you mean by “layering?”
Third, you can’t make sentries move, so you might have to recreate it with barriers and other stuff
