I want to make a game that’s based off of character interactions and less on playing since I feel like that’s an original idea I would enjoy coding.
I take a lot of inspirational from “satirical” visual novels like Class of 09 which is, summarized, a visual novel with no sort of romance, if anything it’s the opposite. And Doki Doki Literature Club which has dark themes with while common in Utsege games, it’s main focus is to start like a moege game.
I don’t want to make a full horror-esque game but I want to make a much deeper story driven by character development and character interactions.
In short, any unique ideas for a visual novel game that pertains to emotional and somewhat darker themes? Lore is also appreciated.
No it’s totally fine! By lore, I meant an addition to the main plot of the game. For example, if the game were to take place in a school, what themes would it touch the most, how would the characters feel, the mood depicted at the beginning and the end- that stuff. Sorry if I wasn’t clear enough.
Beep, Beep, Beep
Waking up in a hospital bed, knowing nothing
You slowly make sure of your surroundings,
Then a random person (sister) rushes toward you,
You push her away and shout “Who are you!”
A doctor comes and says “He has amnesia, he can’t remember anything”
You suddenly feel dizzy and faint,
The last things you hear were, “What’s happening to him?”
“Save him!”
Then things go black…
Flash Back
You’re currently in a house, searching for something.
You suddenly hear a rustle, and you jump back,
From the bush a person comes out, scared,
He tells you not to go deeper, and not to go in the house,
You ignore him thinking “What a weird guy”
As you go deeper, you regret not listening to the man
Then you get jumped by something, something big…
Back to Reality
You suddenly remember everything,
You knew you had to go back to that forest
Heavily inspired by Block Tales (which is heavily inspired by Earthbound and Paper Mario), so spoilers if you haven’t played it;
Spoiler, Hint Hint
You’re going to BlockCon, the largest convention of geeks coders ever! You walk on your way, talk to a few regulars from the cafe you own, and step inside.
IT’S AN OPERA THEATER!
You talk to a few little penguins who can talk[1] who are scared of you because their uncle told them some people like eating penguins. You talk them down, and they grow more and more fond of how polite you are. Before you get jumped, you walk towards a seat in the front.
You see an old penguin [2] who recognizes you for something you didn’t do. Then, during the opening, a hooded guy interrupts the speech and kicks the speaker off the edge of the stage. The old penguin says something about “I’LL KILL YOU!” and tells you to knock him out of the park. You easily destroy the hooded guy for some reason. Then he throws a clock at you. Out of all the things he could throw. But then you wake up in your bed, wondering what’s for lunch.
A penguin walks up to you to “Get the heck out of their bed” and you say, “How about I kill you.” You then proceed to get penguin rocketed into oblivion. You wake up yet again to find the penguin is still there, saying all the same things. You wake up again to find yourself frozen by a king, beaten senseless by a gorilla, consumed in anger, and then guilty of your actions.
(Sorry I sped up the last bit, I might revise it later.)
Oof. After a 30-minute late bus in the morning, 15 minutes late to first class, and then waiting an hour at school for the bus that might have stopped at Casa Tequila, I’m tired.
Hope you enjoy reading
IF you don’t like this because it’s way too close for comfort to the actual storyline, I’ll make another one up.
I’ll come up with some lore tomorrow. Wait until then.
Lore:
Ughh…Where am I? That’s what you thought before you opened your eyes. You realize that you are in a wood cabin. You look out the window and see nothing but sprawling wilderness in every direction. How’d I get here? Why am here? Those questions linger in your head as you search for some way to connect with civilization. You search the shelves, drawers, every n00k and cranny in the cabin, but nothing. Just empty glass bottles lying everywhere. Here, you are left with two choices, stay here until help arrives, or leave and find your way back to civilization. You find an old sack, grabbed one of the bottles, filled it with water, and left. Surprisingly, there’s already a dirt path leading away from the cabin. ’Convenient.’ you think, pressing on.
2 days later…
You’ve been hiking for days now, you’ve seen a lot. Pristine lakes, beautiful mountains, towering trees, but no sign of other humans. The last cabin you saw was your own. Suddenly, you come across a road. ‘A road!’ you thought, ’Finally! I’m so close to civilization!
You follow the road for what seems like hours. The sun starts to set and soon night falls. ‘Strange, I haven’t seen any cars…I wonder why—‘ Something stops you cold. A red car, wrecked and on the side of the road. You look around, and you see the license plate, ‘65ARE7’. ‘That, that’s my license plate…’ Suddenly the memories come flooding back. You remember, you were driving with your wife, and your daughter, and you crashed. It was nothing, that squirrel had just shocked you. One jerk of the steering wheel was all it took…Now they’re gone…all because of you… idk what else to add, tell me if it could use some improvement
