8 Important Tips for Top-Down! (inspired by SirWyWy's Platformer guide)

Hi again! I got inspired by SirWyWy’s guide about 8 common mistakes in platformer and decided to make a tips guide dedicated to top-down (my favorite game mode, don’t argue with me). hope you take this and use it in your games, feel free to suggest more in the replies

1. Make sure you make good use of layerd terrain

Layering terrain is very useful in top-down to make things look 3d-ish, for example adding cliffs and edges to walls.

2. Remember to add barriers often.

Unlike platformer, in top-down, players can move up and down without limit, unless you place collision objects. so if you don’t want a player to go somewhere, simply make a wall or barrier there so its impossible.

3. Make something new!

It’s good practice to make a mechanic for your map so it stands out from others. and if you don’t make something unique then you are not invited to my birthday party GET OU- (/j) but most importantly, it makes the experience more fun for the players

4. Add Secrets!

The argueably best part of Top-Down is the exploration aspect, it encourages players to explore and find secrets. so why not take advanedge of that and make some secret Easter eggs.

5. If your game is single player, LIMIT IT TO HOST ONLY

This one can get quite annoying, basically many games in GKC are single player, however they don’t check to make sure that there is only ONE player playing, which most of the time can break the entire game. cough cough most doors GKC games cough cough

6. ALWAYS PLAY TEST!

Shocker, testing your map also applies to top-down. this is because top-down is VERY technical when it comes to block code and other devices, so you ALWAYS should test whenever you add a new feature to your map.

7. Make sure you follow the guidelines

The Gimkit guidelines are there, don’t ignore them. if you wouldn’t show some things in your game to a 6 yr old (gimkit’s main audience), then remove it or change it.

8. Have fun with it!

The most important thing about GKC, Have fun! do what you want, just take a little creativity

and that’s it! hope you have fun making maps
Toodles!

Because of this, i never play doors with friends or just me.

Yeah imagine if someone broke the guidelines because of an inappropriate thumbnail………

This always make me rage.

Abyss Adventures as an example.

I heard that there was chicken.

Overall great guide, maybe some gifs and pics help.

The only setting that can help with that is this in Map Options.

Also, great guide! There used to be guides for tips for maps in general, but now that there are two types of maps, this makes sense. I might make a guide for platformer, but if anyone else wants to help that’d be fine. (There can be several as long as they are different.)

that doesn’t limit it to host only

Oh, wait. I just now realized what you meant.
I’m pretty sure there’s no way you can allow host only unless you start by yourself.

basically you set it so that the host spawns in the normal spawn pad, while the other players spawn on a trigger that broadcasts to a team switcher that switches them to spectator.

also I didnt completely think they were needed but I’ll do that after school most likely.

Y’know, I never thought of that, but that doesn’t really limit it to host only.
It just only allows the host to play…but it’s better than my idea…

You can use an easy airlock-type door to keep others out of the game, or switch them to spectator.

I can do that. I can make a quick photo of how to do that, or are you doing it?
@Fleet.

switching them to spectator is what that does, it triggers a trigger which broadcasts for a team switcher to make all the other players besides the host a spectator.

Nice guide Fleet!

I’ll always make sure to use layerd terrain!

ALWAYS PLAY TEST should be the biggest one before publishing. You have no idea how many messed up or low-quality games I’ve seen. You don’t want to waste your Gimbucks if your game isn’t really worth playing…

I’ve been one of them…

Also, HAVE FUN is also one of the most important. #1, probably, because it’s the whole point of the website, the update, and the forum…
