Hi again! I got inspired by SirWyWy’s guide about 8 common mistakes in platformer and decided to make a tips guide dedicated to top-down (my favorite game mode, don’t argue with me). hope you take this and use it in your games, feel free to suggest more in the replies
1. Make sure you make good use of layerd terrain
Layering terrain is very useful in top-down to make things look 3d-ish, for example adding cliffs and edges to walls.
2. Remember to add barriers often.
Unlike platformer, in top-down, players can move up and down without limit, unless you place collision objects. so if you don’t want a player to go somewhere, simply make a wall or barrier there so its impossible.
3. Make something new!
It’s good practice to make a mechanic for your map so it stands out from others. and if you don’t make something unique then you are not invited to my birthday party GET OU- (/j) but most importantly, it makes the experience more fun for the players
4. Add Secrets!
The argueably best part of Top-Down is the exploration aspect, it encourages players to explore and find secrets. so why not take advanedge of that and make some secret Easter eggs.
5. If your game is single player, LIMIT IT TO HOST ONLY
This one can get quite annoying, basically many games in GKC are single player, however they don’t check to make sure that there is only ONE player playing, which most of the time can break the entire game. cough cough most doors GKC games cough cough
6. ALWAYS PLAY TEST!
Shocker, testing your map also applies to top-down. this is because top-down is VERY technical when it comes to block code and other devices, so you ALWAYS should test whenever you add a new feature to your map.
7. Make sure you follow the guidelines
The Gimkit guidelines are there, don’t ignore them. if you wouldn’t show some things in your game to a 6 yr old (gimkit’s main audience), then remove it or change it.
8. Have fun with it!
The most important thing about GKC, Have fun! do what you want, just take a little creativity
and that’s it! hope you have fun making maps
Toodles!
