Solved, thank you for your ideas!

Hey all (feels different to be starting a Help topic rather than answering one lol),

My friend @Karlz and I are creating a medieval platformer map. You start in the interior of the castle and are searching for hidden scrolls/keys in order to progress. What is some lore we could add to make the game more interesting? For example, logbooks, secret rooms, NPC dialogue, etc.
Thanks for helping!

i have idea on lore: the king has gone missing and the scrolls are clues of where he went to

maybe you are a knight trying to climb to the top of a mountain to slay a dragon to save the kingdom

I have cooked some up some good ideas for this one.

  1. Make different portions of the map - as an example, Don’t Look Down has various adventures you can traverse through while encountering different obstacles (and especially harder ones as you get up there.) Some examples for your map though could be: A courtyard, a stable, a dining room, a pantry, a throne room, a bell tower, a grand hall, a honorary room (picture frames, lore, and some dedications - example: 07 bh.)

  2. Use the ‘change size’ ability for props to your advantage by making objects smaller as your progress - this will actually add challenge to your map. And this is actually what most maps lack - as they often have 1-2 of the core qualities but not all. Examples of core qualities: Lore, Decor/Attention to detail, Quality, The map actually working, Fun to play, etc. You want your map to have lore but also have a challenge to conquer in order to access the lore, or the scroll or the key, etc.

  3. Here are some actual lore ideas: Have the castle dedicated to someone: a king, echo, vortex, etc. A good idea would actually be King Gimrick. Either you are trying to help the king find his stuff, infiltrate the castle to defeat him or something along those lines. At the end you could have a boss battle, an explanation to everything, you could also (if you have the work ethic.) make you carry a message or do some sort of activity that brings to another level of the platformer.

Thanks!

Make the scrolls spells/artifacts used to eliminate the main antagonist

You could also have them enter a throne room and the floor fall out from under the player into a dungeon.

Anyone have any more ideas?

Maybe there’s a secret side quest involving a hidden door behind a bookcase, where you can find something to help you later during a battle of somesorts.

Maybe a secret underground room, buried deep beneath the castle a legend of fable almost, you have to find multiple things to unlock the hidden room.

Lore-
There is a young Knight whose parents are imprisoned for Hoarding Gold which was a violation of Executive Order 6102, so to get them back the Knight must traverse the Kingdom of Gimeria to slay the Dragon of Gold to pay the Kingdom back

I had some new lore ideas. You could make a secret wrong way during any point in the normal parkour. Thant wrong path leads to some sort of entrance that teleports you to an underground dungeon/chamber. You have to progress in the dungeon by looking through and puzzling things in order to escape. (like an escape room!) After that you could teleport the player back to where they were before they went off path or to wherever you want. Plus, have some lore in the dungeon - the king trapped a mysterious dark force, a deadly monster/gladiator (may or may not be anticipating glad2) If you go down into the dungeon, with escaping, you could also add the aspect of fighting the monster/boss.

Alright, I appreciate everyone’s ideas! I’m going to mark @Brass’s post as the solution because they wrote a lot and we’ll definitely use it. But all the other stuff posted here is great and if you all don’t mind, we might use that too. Thanks!
