Replacement for zones?

I am currently working on a Mario-Kart-8-Deluxe style game, and want functionality like in the Tour courses where the course changes every lap. I tried to implement a checkpoint system where the checkpoint activates when you reach the previous checkpoint, and deactivates when you reach that checkpoint, but the problem is that there is no scope for zones, so A) it was possible for the intended path of the course to be impossible in multiplayer, and B) it was possible to wait at the finish line for the final checkpoint to be activated. Is there a replacement for zones I can use that has options for scope?

how about triggers? they work fine.
