Remember to Properly Title Thumbnail Requests

Updated as of February 13th. Bird has a lot of good points. Basically, what I mean, and what I think was unclear because I did a poor job of communicating it earlier on, thumbnail titles have reached a bit of a low point. Can we try to make it a suggestion that they should be more unique? The original post is unedited below.

Original Proposition

If you all would be so kind as to read through this before flagging for off topic, that’d be helpful. Mostly because it becomes useless if it cannot be seen, and then the conversation dies. Thanks.

There are a lot of thumbnail requests. Like, an absurd amount. I muted the whole category. It’s gone now. Makes me sad because I like seeing the guides and stuff.

And the ones that I do see are confusing, because they all have the same title. “Thumbnail request for my lil bro”, “Thumbnail request for GREAT GAME”, “Thumbnail request for my game”, “Idk but might need a thumbnail”, “Need title name and title art”, “Thumbnail request for a game about an all-powerful cactus and the one that worships it”, “Me asking for a thumbnail?!”… there are so many and they could all mean anything.

It would matter less if there were less, but having a set few things to be formatted would help artists find what they are looking to do faster, would clean up the forum, and generally would be more organized. I feel like most people are going to agree with me here that something like this is needed, the question is simply what the format could be.

The one I came with is pretty simple, and I’d also like to stress that following it exactly in order doesn’t seem necessary, creativity is good and I’m not trying to kill it.

Thumbnail for [Name of Game] due [Due date]

I think the most important part here is that it doesn’t say thumbnail request, because it’s obvious already. Saves space. Saves time.

The thing I was debating was squeezing in whether or not it was photoshopped or hand drawn, but that seems excessive, I don’t think there’s a need.

A handful of thumbnails, mostly by more experienced users, already do something like this. But a lot do not. So if this could be followed to some extent, that’d be great.

Like, “Star Wars Thumbnail due 3/1” is fine, but so is “Thumbnail, due 3/1, for Star Wars Game” is fine as well. Personal preference (I’d do the first one for sure though).

Basically what I’m saying is, can we establish this as the norm and make sure people know, like through the rules topic, and this is also something that can be edited into titles by regulars. I think it’d make it easier, cleaner, and more organized to deal with the massive amount of thumbnail requests this forum sees.

Oh and @twofoursixeight I debated over whether or not to message you for this, but you know, act first and ask for forgiveness later kind of thing.

@Slim or @Bird, could you set a slow mode? And everyone remember that just because this is about a forums thing, it’s not an excuse to be off topic. Please keep comments only about this format proposition, thanks.

Debate away.

I meant barrier and prop art. You know, GKC art. Also. No off topic chat. This is like off topic. So uh let’s try to keep the conversation around the proposition.

The purpose of this topic has changed a lot. I know some people voiced their frustrations with that, but I’m glad because it means we were able to get somewhere instead of continuing to state the same opinions without compromise.

Now this topic’s purpose is to serve as a reminder to properly title thumbnail requests. This means not calling them “Pic for my game” or “URGENT thumbnail plz” but instead putting some effort and including the game name and optionally the due date if you really want to help out prospective artists.

People seems slightly confused. This is still a proposition for a suggestion. Not law. Not an enforced rule.

It isn’t a rule, but if you see “Thumbnail plz” and in the first post the game name is listed, then yeah, it might be really helpful to rename the topic to include the game name without changing it too much. If you do that, it’s also really helpful to make a post kindly informing the original poster why you made the change- to make the title more readable, unique, and informational- and you could also link to this topic if you want.

At least, that’s what I think a good thing to do would be.

So you can bump this every so often if twofour says it’s okay for this to exist just as a reminder to properly title thumbnail topics.

@here, what do you think of this? Is this a fair compromise and a good way of making sure people are reminded that thumbnail titles should be unique?

I left the original topic contents unedited above in case anyone’s ever curious how this started.

i thought art guides were not allowed? i could be wrong but i do agree that people should write it that way.

I’d add that if you’re a thumbnail artist, your opinion is incredibly valuable here so if you have any suggestions feel free to make those for sure.

The Art category is cooked, thumbnail requests are coming out every minute, with no one using the format, so this could help with that problem

Yeah, reducing stress on the artists who deal with all of them seemed like a good idea, obviously the issue remains that new users might not use it, but that’s always an issue.

they still may be ignorant. it would just be like thumbnail request format, ignored.
i don’t really see this being helpful in general (even though it’s a nice idea)

I think that this topic is great because a LOT of people come in here and just ask for art with no details or anything. I think we should make a singular guide for newbies for each category, and for stuff like this, telling them what the format is to use, and how to word stuff. We should ask to have these guides pinned for the first few days for new users. I am actually going to use this guide right now because I am going to make a request. Great Job @Turtle !

What if the thumbnail request format is added to the blue banner?

@Bird, could you possibly add it there?

Didn’t forget you either, @Slim.

@Unstable, or whoever’s online.

concluding that thumbnail guides are not allowed, been a rule for a while
the reason being is that people have said so and it’s not about gimkit so that’s the conclusion i have to make here
correction: i was actually talking about thumbnail guides, not requests

This is actually for the title, to convey some extra bits of information and make sure the title is actually usefull, not just “Thumbnail request for my game”. Read through the proposition and see what you think.

ima be honest i see your point and im thinking how you put so much into this but for me its kinda unneccasary also im pretty sure most people ask for thumnails before they even able to publish as atleast thats what id do

I think most people have an idea of the name of the game when they ask for a thumbnail, because that usually goes on the thumbnail, if that’s what you meant.

I think even just trying to include some more details or having this topic visible to spread the word is helpful.
