Maybe they’re really busy. Me and Shadow[1] have also been unable to reach Gimkit (forums pm & email)

Is it possible the ping issue could have something to do with this? Just an idea…

Maybe, I’m not totally sure. Right now I keep checking my messages through forum.creative.gimkit.com/u/turtle/messages because they don’t ping me.

Also good morning and bump.

I have been wanting to make a guide on how to improve lore and character design. I have seen some unique stories and characters on forums, but a lot of them are usually a remake of some other game with different characters and those characters don’t always have the best writing or layout, and it’s the same with plot. I just want to teach people how to make fun and exciting stories and characters on their own and being able to do whatever they want with them instead of having to pick some lore suggested for them. If I do it, (which will probably happen) I’m probably going to take some inspiration off this guide. Oh and I’ve done a creative writing class which has helped me a ton with lore.

I’m… going to take that as a compliment? Uh, good luck with your guide. Thanks for reading.

Yes it’s a compliment, and I seriously want to improve people’s writing skills.

Bump and quick status update I guess.
Nope, no luck from Gimkit yet but hopefully they write me back in a day or so.

Uh Turtle realizes pings don’t work TUUUUUURTLE. Could I add a section to your guide on version numbers? Because I see some people doing version numbers wrongly in discovery and I just blow up or sm like that. I dunno if it really fits here but I thought I would ask.

Sure, can you post it here first? It’s fine if you nullify the bump.

Alright I am in desperate need of some more feedback and so while sorry for wrecking the reusable bump- as punishment I will put “Reusable Bump Ender” as my name lol- it was going to happen anyways since I asked '83 to post their proposed addition to the guide.

Basically, I always feel like I end up in a weird between place where I have no idea what to improve on but a sort of 50-40% split between 4-5 stars for ratings on this guide.

So, please, read the entire thing- the second part is linked at the end of the original topic and no, it’s been a month and nothing from Gimkit about expanding the character limit- and be constructive.

I have some free time coming up so I’ll be able to rewrite and work on the guide.

Oh and one last thing, if you have an addition to the topic you should feel free to write something up and I’ll make the post a wiki later on so you can add stuff to it right now you can’t because of aforementioned character limit).

Thanks in advance and please be constructive but honest as well with criticism. And I’m already planning to add images leave me alone lol.

Sorry, our school internet was cut so I couldn’t. I’ll try to tonight ;-;

Hmm. I read through the entire guide, phew. From what I saw, this guide is very strongly worded and provides really good details and structure for the purpose.(Map-making and Game Design). One thing you could add was maybe a block code and device usage section? However, I don’t know if that would fit the content, but it might be something to consider. Grammar is up to check and you hit the main points spot on. Oh, and for the play testing area, you could add if you don’t have anyone available to playtest. They could go in on a separate tab or account to see if the problems are happening there. Sorry if I missed something, but overall this is a very solid guide. Also, where are the images?

I don’t have any negative feedback, sorry.

Yeah, I really wanted to add some super specific sections but I figured that would actually work better for a different mechanics only guide. Also character limit ahhh.

Some block code might be nice and I can see specific devices being used for some of the mentioned mechanics although again seperate guide since that part is already like half the guide’s length.

Thanks for the feedback!

Version Numbers

I see a lot of people use Version Numbers on their games in Discovery[1]. However, they misuse them which is frustrating to say the least. Version numbers follow the format of major.minor.patch.

  • Major: This number should increase (all both numbers after it reset to 0) when there is a major update or overhaul into the game. Some examples are an entirely new game mode, changing up all the graphics, or completely revamp the mechanics of the game.
  • Minor: This number should increase (and the patch number reset to 0) when there is a minor update to the game. This would include new cosmetics, new Easter eggs, a new season, and other small additions.
  • Patch: These include bug fixes most commonly, but also include stuff like quality of life improvements.

Alphas & Betas

No, not the gen alpha slang. This is a term for when a game is released before its final playable state.

Alphas generally are mechanics that are split up, not really forming a game. They should be written in some way that dictates that it is an alpha. [2]. As well alphas should NEVER be listed as 1.0.0. Games in 1.0.0 mean the game is in a FINAL PLAYABLE STATE. AND ALPHAS AREN’T. Alphas are also only really ever played by you and family/friends.
An example would be if Undertale was in alpha, the pretty graphics might be represented by various colored blocks, only forming rudimentary graphics of the ruins and battles. Still technically playable, but 100% not its final game state.

Betas are versions of the games that tend to be very buggy, but now they actually represent a game. Similar to alpha they should be represented by something that clearly states they are a beta and NEVER BE 1.0.0. Betas are now generally when you release this out into the world.
An example would be if Undertale was now a fleshed out game, with its pretty graphics and the fight system is final, however there are some bugs and a few mechanics that need to be fully ironed out.

Finally, after testing and testing and testing, and alpha, and alpha, and beta, you can release the full game as 1.0.0.

Showing Update Logs

For me the most appealing way to show an update log is using Pop-Ups and Pop-Up Call to Actions that don’t transmit on a channel so it looks like this:

Thanks for reading! Now make sure you do version numbers correctly or I’ll crash out!

– recalledMemories ('83)

Well that’s that Turtle! Let me know if there is anything I can fix about it!

  1. ie, v1.4.2 ↩︎

  2. ie, 0.3.5 [ALPHA] or 0.3.5-alpha ↩︎

Looks great '83, thanks! Where do you think it would best fit in as a section, or would it be in its own category or whatnot?

Anyone else have feedback lol?

(and sorry for the late response)
