Is it possible for a sentry to not hold something in their hand when they're on players team?

I think there’s a glitch where if you give a sentry with a pickaxe, and have them mine dynamic dirt, if the pick-axe can break after use, the sentry loses the pickaxe, and therefore, no gadget.
