I'm having trouble making my obby try and appeal to many people

As a wise man once said, “The Gim who chases two Gimfish, catches neither.” Some of the best maps or games even don’t go overly broad.

They have a defined structure and a defined audience. You should make sure your game’s game plan is clear and planned out before you work on minor details. Ask yourself how will the player progress through the game? How will players interact with the world? Is it platformer or top down? Overly gimmicky games tend to be super confusing and distasteful for players so don’t go insane.

You should also ask yourself who you’re making this game for. Is this just for the stumbling person scrolling through Gimkit Creative Discovery? Are you making this for a group of friends? Don’t make your audience too broad however because you’d rather have some non-Harry Potter fans have a lackluster experience rather than having everyone not enjoy it all.

Also don’t stay stuck on making every little detail perfectly perfect! Your map won’t go anywhere if you just continue adding little references in your lobby without making the basic jumps your map will have. Make it exist first then improve upon it later. Your map will be set up for success if you consider these tips.

I would first create the map layout, then add the necessary functionality. After you’ve done that, add some extra stuff or try to simplify the systems or make them more efficient on memory (the higher the map memory, the higher the lag (I think)), and add something that makes it replayable, like renadomly chosen paths, or player chosen paths. Or just post it with the necessary stuff and replayability and add updates later.

You could make an area that a secret place or in the pre-game lobby that has an update log and/or something like Next Update: [date], and you could put your Gimkit Community Forum name so people that have played you map and liked it could help if you make a topic asking for update ideas and/or thumbnail requests/ideas (Though the Thumbnail artists would probably cover that part.)

Also, expect some plays at first and a decrease as time goes on. Your map will appear in the Newest section for only a short time before only being able to be found by searching the map name or creator name. A good thumbnail will attract people’s attention so they play it, and if it’s replayable and/or will get new content/stuff to do soon, they will keep replaying. You can also add a link to your map in your Forum bio, so people can easily find it later on.

But most importantly:

So, to sum it up:

1. Eye catching thumbnail.

Your map will only be in the Newest section for so long. A good thumbnail will get people’s attention and make people think “Oh, this isn’t just a screen shot of the lobby or a random image or d#mb meme. This map might be good.” This is because maps usually match the thumbnail’s quality.

2. Make it replayable.

Once a player 1 short and straight path to the end with little to do is usually boring. If you’re skilled enough, you can use this to add to the gameplay.

2.1 Add secrets and lore/information.

Something to look for often makes people stick around. These can be a secret room for lore purposes and/or containing a gadget to use, or something that only has a chance to appear while playing. Maybe it’s a different fish jumping out of the water in a river, maybe it’s a shadow d3m0N appearing for 0.3 seconds. But whatever it is you add, make sure there’s a possible way people can find it, like a secret note or something to make your character say something like: “Something feels off…”. Or don’t, that’ll make it more secret.

3. Updates and content.

Once players find everything in the game, they usually stop playing because there’s nothing left to do. Make an update board/log in the lobby and put your Forum name so people can know there will be more to do sometime or be the one that gives you the idea for what to add next.

4. Link your map in your Forums bio.

This way, people that didn’t see it when it was in the Newest section can find it and play it.

Ohhh!! Wait those are actually really good names!!

maybe! I love me a good backstory and lore, but not very good at making it! I was thinking maybe something happened to make minigames or something? and like, the room of requirement? idk lol

Don’t forget to mark a solution if you found your answer. A solution should be the post that helps you the most.
