I recently created a new platforming game (unpublished) called “Shock” that consists of just barriers as platforms because terrain and props don’t fit in. The unique part of my game is that instead of using the typical health and shield, it uses fragility and sentries that try to knock you off. The problem is that my platformer still feels unoriginal because other games use barriers in a similar way and my friends have told me that it wasn’t fun. What unique feature(s) should I add to enhance gameplay?
I think you should go into a bit more detail with the whole ‘shockwave’ idea - you could have some other ways that the game tries to knock you off, like animated barriers that move around, jiggle or collapse (or something like that).
Oh. Then maybe you could add more levels. Maybe turn off the fragility. It was probably the reason why people didn’t like it. Also, maybe make the extra levels with props.
maybe some more visual to it. make some animations, cool transitions to new levels, maybe have a camera view so you only see the obstacles in front of you
Maybe you could also change up the entire color scheme at one point after a transition (like normal becomes red, ground turns green, and poison turns blue) and don’t say what’s new, so the player has to figure out which one is which, or just introduce new ground mechanics where you can wall jump or something. You could also probably add long lasers (like in DLD) through/over some platforms and the such.
(PS You’ve inspired me on how to make a platformer map, ty)
(PSPS, how did you make the height/defeat counter thing, could you link me a guide or something to do that)
Please no camera point! those things are so annoying! Also I like the second thumbnail better. Honestly, I think the game seems awesome! Just play test and make sure its possible. (don’t how many platformers I’ve quit because there is a spot that is Gimpossible to leave)
