The reason they worship this thing is actually out of fеar, since they witnessed a deity and could only hope it would care about their prays
Also you should expand it beyond village, a deity that destroys a village at max just sound awkward
They are in costumes because worshipping the deity has led them to change and deform over time, they could only go into society if they were masks
Also they got strange powers from worshipping
