Concepts for non enemy/sentry based mechanics

so creating an RPG storyline game without the lazy “place a sentry anywhere method”
is kinda tough for me
and trying to come up with unique and intriguing mechanics is a hard challenge for most
so I need ideas on what mechanics I could do that don’t include sentries
so far I already have

fear points/timors (latin for far/also increases insanity the closer you are to them)
crimson stars (story item)
insanity meter (based on fragility)
story books (insanity reducer)
open and closable keybinded menu (still debugging the opening and closing part of it)

also I need to figure out how to do a decent gradient for better lighting
of the timors so if some one would show me how to do that
it would be much appreciated
also why are latin and fear blocked words ._.
I somewhat understand the 2nd one
but the first one I don’t quite understand why it was blocked

you can always do the classic prop mining, using rock props.

Guards, shop keepers, assassins for hire, black market… Lots of stuff can be done. A miner, blacksmith, even Santa. Just give them a job and place and it can appear coherent

if you want to make a dark effect, try using barriers, darken them, and turn off collision on the barrier.
